Cardiovascular research leader honoured with award for outstanding achievement

The pioneering contribution of a senior figure in Scotland’s research landscape has been recognised with a prestigious Outstanding Achievement Award

Professor Lis Neubeck, Clinical Champion of the Cardiovascular Clinical Network at NHS Research Scotland (NRS), was singled out at the recent Nurse of the Year Awards for her “tireless dedication and passion for nursing innovation and research”.

Organisers the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Scotland paid tribute to her exemplary contribution which, it said, “has revolutionised health care delivery, particularly in the realm of spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) in Scotland”.

At the National Museum of Scotland ceremony in Edinburgh last week, the judging panel further recognised that Lis – Head of the Centre for Cardiovascular Health at Edinburgh Napier University –had “significantly improved patient experiences and outcomes” through her “innovative strategies and commitment to person-centred care”.

In 2021, she became the first nurse to serve as an NRS Cardiovascular Clinical Network Lead.

Her groundbreaking research aims to progress innovative solutions to secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease alongside the identification and management of atrial fibrillation, as well as the implementation of new technologies that improve access to health care.

Over the last four years, Lis has been a trailblazing supporter for patients who have experienced SCAD and her singular efforts have led to the development of a new clinical service for survivors in Scotland.

She has also secured more than £7m in competitive research funding, and last year was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

On winning the award, Lis said: "I am truly grateful to receive this recognition from RCN Scotland. Every day in cardiovascular nursing presents new challenges and opportunities to make a difference, and this award is a wonderful encouragement. Thank you to everyone who supports our mission to provide exceptional care.

“This is an honour that I share with my exceptional team. Without their expertise, insight, and commitment our success would not be possible. This award is a reflection of their hard work and dedication, and I am immensely lucky and proud to work with them.

“It’s incredible to be in a position to showcase the value of research for nursing. I hope me winning this award inspires others to take up a career in nursing research.”

Cardiovascular Champion Support Manager at NRS, Mary McAuley said: “It is a pleasure to work closely with someone who is so immensely dedicated to identifying new ways to bring about positive change. This award reflects the passion she imbues in her work and the inspiration she consistently gives to others looking to follow her example – and I believe that example will be felt for generations to come.

“Her holistic, inclusive, thorough approach ensures that she continues to make a big impact in cardiovascular nursing, delivering an exceptional level of care, support, and collaboration that touches everyone from colleagues, to patients, their families, and communities, while demonstrating how more can always be achieved.”

Commending Lis on her award, Colin Poolman, RCN Scotland Executive Director said: “This award celebrates Lis’ significant contribution to the development of nursing as a profession. Her achievements show that not only is she an exemplary nurse, but she has earned recognition from, and the respect of, her peers and should be acknowledged as a pioneer in the profession. She deserves all the congratulations for trailblazing a legacy of sustainably improved outcomes for individuals, communities, and the wider population.”

Lis was ‘highly commended’ in the Services to Medicine category of the Scottish Women’s Awards in September last year.
