Programme Grants for Applied Research

Programme Grants for Applied Research

20th June 2024

Scottish applicants are being encouraged to apply to NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research (PGfAR) Competition 45 which is inviting Stage 1 applications for research proposals to develop individual programmes of applied health research

The PGfAR is offering the opportunity to develop and advance health and care research careers. Applicants can now include funding for research capacity development, across all stages of the academic career pathway (i.e., from internships to Masters to PhD, to post-doctoral). Applications that include career development for methodological disciplines are particularly welcome.

Research funded through a Programme Grant typically consists of an interrelated group of high quality projects focused on a coherent theme and hence require multidisciplinary approaches, including clinical, health economics, statistics, qualitative and behavioural sciences, to ensure that research objectives can be met. The amount awarded and the length of the funding period will depend on the nature of the proposed work, in particular whether or not the proposal includes a substantial powered trial.

Applications to PGfAR are made with the support of an NHS body and other providers of NHS services in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. If an application is successful, a contract will be placed with that organisation for delivery of the research and all funds for the research will be paid to the NHS organisation or other provider of NHS services.

The submission deadline for applications is 13:00 on 31 July 2024.

PGfAR and Programme Development Grants open to Scottish researchers

From autumn 2023, health and social care researchers in the devolved administrations have increased access to health and social care research funding via the National Institute for Health and Care Research. The expanded list of NIHR research programmes that are available to researchers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will boost cross-UK research and help increase access to research.

Webinars and Events

To reach more interested researchers and answer any questions specific to each DA, the PGfAR and PDG team are hosting a series of webinar and in-person outreach events. These will give researchers a chance to hear more about the remit of PGfAR and PDG funding, what makes a competitive application and ask questions.

Webinar

If you miss the webinar, and would like to receive a recording, please email pgfar@nihr.ac.uk.

In person events

These will be full day events and the afternoon sessions will give researchers the opportunity to have a one-to-one session with a member of the PGfAR team to discuss their application ideas and receive feedback.
