Get Involved
As a member of the public, NRS Primary Care has a number of different ways for you to get involved
- We have a number of actively recruiting studies that you may find of interest
- We have a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Group based in Glasgow
This group meets to advise health researchers and NRS Primary Care on all aspects of the research process, including the materials used during research studies. We welcome patients, carers and members of the public from across Scotland to give their opinions about research.
Through Patient and Public Involvement (PPI), we can help keep health research activity focused on what will really benefit patients, carers and the public using frontline services. PPI for primary care research covers all clinical conditions, which is different from most other charities and advocacy organisations that are organised around specific conditions. The NRS Primary Care PPI Group has the potential to play a key link role between researchers and interested patients and members of the public.
The NRS Primary Care PPI Group was established in January 2016 at the University of Glasgow. The group was set up to listen to patient voices in general practice research. Our PPI members have played an active and enthusiastic role in the development of the group: planning and participating in seminars with researchers and patients; collaborating with university colleagues in presenting a workshop for stakeholders and conducting four PPI group meetings each year.
Our meetings are hybrid with the option to attend face-to-face or virtually. In 2024 the meetings will be on the following dates (in Glasgow if attending in person):
- Thursday 15th February, 11.30am - 1.30pm
- Thursday 16th May, 11.30am - 1.30pm
- Thursday 15th August, 11.30am - 1.30pm
- Thursday 28th Nov, 11.30am - 1.30pm
If you are a member of the public and want to find out more about becoming involved or a researcher and want to find out more about presenting your ideas to our group, please see our leaflet or email nrsprimarycarenetworkadmin@dundee.ac.uk.
There are several research registers which you may wish to join:
Join Dementia Research is currently focusing on new interventions for people in the early stages of dementia. People who get involved will contribute to improving our understanding of dementia, as well as shape services and treatments available to patients.
My Diabetes My Way is an interactive website to help patients manage their diabetes. The ‘My Diabetes My Way’ team are keen to increase the profile and usage of this interactive website that can be used to manage diabetes online.
It is a way of accessing personal records, allows people to add test results taken at home and gives lots of general information to improve the management of their condition and minimise the risk of complications in the long term.
Finally, members of the public, with and without a health condition, may be interested in signing up to the Scottish Health Research (SHARE) register.
SHARE is an initiative created to establish a register of people interested in participating in health research and who agree to allow SHARE to use the coded data in their various NHS computer records to check whether they might be suitable for health research studies. This access can be incredibly useful when it comes to developing new treatments and cures for a wide variety of health conditions.
If you are interested in letting your patients know about SHARE or to request a leaflet supply, you can get in touch via the following ways:
